Being Prepared to assist Scouts in emergencies
When disaster strikes, Scouts are always amongst the first-responders. As trusted and skilled members of their communities, they are uniquely placed to assist relief efforts following earthquakes, typhoons and manmade catastrophes.
Donate to the Emergency Fund before disaster occurs to equip Scouts with the necessary resources to immediately take action.
From Nepal to Indonesia, Haiti to Philippines, Bosnia to Columbia, Ecuador to USA, Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mexico, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey, Scouts have demonstrated that they stand prepared to mobilise in their thousands in response to all types of natural or manmade disasters, including typhoons, earthquakes, refugee flows, Ebola outbreaks and armed conflicts, working alongside other emergency-responders to provide a range of vital services.
Scouts are not experts in humanitarian relief of emergency rescue, but they are great leaders, so can use their skills to support expert agencies to do their jobs even better.
For example, in Haiti, following Hurricane Matthew in October 2016, 1650 Scouts conducted a massive door-to-doorwater hygiene safety and prevention campaign, educating and empowering their local communities on safe water usage and collection; and distributing water purification tablets to ensure clean drinking water for over 27,000 people in affected areas.
And in Indonesia, Scouts swiftly moved to action following massive earthquakes which first hit the Sulawesi province in early August 2018 and then Lombok Island at the end of September 2018. As trained responders, they were able to provide support for logistics, food distribution, and to assist with the search for and retrieval of bodies of the victims, numbering in the thousands, to ensure that as many families as possible could give a dignified burial to their loved ones.
Your generous donations to the Emergency Fund will support all aspects of disaster prevention, preparedness and mitigation, and will enable reserves to be built up before they are needed to fund resources such as sanitation materials, tools to remove debris, first-aid supplies, temporary shelters, etc.

Every successful project starts with a dream
Scouts work hard raising funds for their projects on the Scout Donation Platform. Thanks to the many contributions (smaller and larger) made by a large number of people, already 69 projects have been fully funded in the past 12 months, but this number can be greatly increased with your help!
Donate now to help us top up the last 20% of projects that are reaching the end of their campaign deadlines and are not yet fully funded, to ensure that the project leader gets the full amount needed so their dream project can become a reality.
Despite the huge efforts made by project leaders and their teams, some projects struggle to reach their funding goal on time. Especially when their available networks have very limited resources and the needs are more significant.
The Scout Donation Platform works on an ‘all or nothing’ approach—which is important to ensure the correct execution of the project as presented. Many well planned projects that could make a difference for the children and young people involved cannot be executed simply because they didn’t reach their funding goal, which would guarantee the viability of the project.
Now you can change this by donating to the Supporting Dreams Fund of The Scarf Circle while sharing your passion for Scouting by spreading the Scout spirit around the world. Your donations will be used effectively to top up the last 20% of projects that are struggling to reach their funding goal on time. You will make dreams come true!
Alternatively, your donation could be used to run a ‘matching campaign’, whereby donations given through the platform are matched, a proven method of motivating fundraisers and donors to act fast to double their impact and raise more funds for great Scout projects.
Because there are times when great leaders only need a little help to create a better world.

Tackling food security in Sub-Saharan Africa
The Food for Life project enables Scouts to help their families and communities achieve household food security by growing their own food in home and commercial gardens, predominantly in countries in Africa.
Donate monthly to Food for Life to provide long-term support tackle food insecurity and feed hungry Scouts and their families.
Food for Life has been developed as a response by Scouts to the food crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa. The food supply is inadequate and constantly challenged by a range of natural and man-made issues such as water and land shortages, poverty, political instability. Families simply do not have enough food to eat and whole communities are severely undernourished, currently a staggering 21% of the population in Africa. Weather patterns have also changed over time as a result of climate change, which means that it’s vital that communities not only learn to grow their own food, but that they also understand which seasonal crops to plant for successful harvests.
Through the Food for Life project, young people are equipped with skills in agriculture, entrepreneurship and business to enable them to contribute to reducing the gap in food production to feed their hungry families and communities. Concretely, Scouts are trained in community agriculture, provided the necessary tools and skills to plant and tend home and community gardens, and produce enough food to serve as a source of income generation. The project also promotes teamwork and community spirit, with Scouts and others coming together to work for a common goal, caring for their community gardens.
Food for Life is active in Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Togo, Niger, South Africa, South Sudan and Uganda, but there is scope to deliver this phenomenal Scout project in other countries and regions challenged by food insecurity.
Your monthly donation to Food for Life will be used to run all of the agricultural and entrepreneurship training at national and local levels, agricultural tools (e.g. watering cans, rakes, hoes), manure and materials to set up the model gardens, etc., so that the project can be rolled out in thousands of communities in Africa and further afield.

The hope of a better future for street children
The Ticket to Life project transforms the lives of street children and young people living in extremely difficult circumstances. Through Scouting, they obtain nurturing, mentoring, food and skills and are supported to continue their education.
Ticket to Life was first introduced in Nairobi, but quickly spread to other towns and cities in Kenya. It then crossed international boundaries and is now run as a flagship project of the Asia-Pacific Region running in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand.
It is based on a peer-to-peer method using Scouts to interact with street children to gradually integrate them back into society. These children are marginalised, scraping a living on the streets, and often in extremely abusive situations, so the approach takes time and patience on both sides.
Scouts first work to earn the children’s trust and confidence, encouraging them to join Scout group meetings. Initial gatherings focus on cleanliness, health and hygiene, and the young people get to play games as children. Over time, some are able to take on leadership roles and assist with running the regular meetings. Where possible, the children are supported to return to school. It takes a great deal of persuasion to change habits and work with the children’s families, if they have any, to convince them of the long-term advantages of education, which is especially hard when those families rely on the minimum income many of the children bring in for daily subsistence. However, this project has proved incredibly successful over time, giving the children it has impacted on a brighter future and path to decent work and standards of life.
Ultimately, the children that are able to participate in Ticket to Life become enthusiastic Scouts themselves, and gain self-worth and the confidence that they can make a positive contribution to society.
Your monthly donations to Ticket to Life will support a great number of vital resources for this long-term life-changing project, including those necessary for the establishment of Scout groups for the children, leadership and skills’ training, health education, the provision of food at meetings, educational materials and Scout uniforms.
